How long have you been working as an interim consultant?
I have worked as an interim consultant on and off for 20 years, but full-time for the past seven years. My assignments have taken me all over the world.
Why did you choose to work as an interim consultant?
It all started when I received an offer from Telia to work on an interim basis. I accepted it, thinking I would eventually take a permanent position. But I enjoyed the interim assignments so much that I kept doing them, and I’ve built a good reputation with clients, which has allowed me to continue.
How has the pandemic affected your work?
Since I work primarily in the food industry, I have received more inquiries than usual as the pandemic has been marked by supply chain issues. As a result, there has been a particularly high demand for knowledgeable experts across the entire supply chain.
What is the best thing about being an interim consultant?
The absolute best part is that I get to meet so many new people. By moving between different industries, I’ve also learned an incredible amount and take the best parts from one industry to the next. It’s often clear that my experience helps open the eyes of organizations that sometimes become blind to their own shortcomings. I’m usually only involved at the beginning of the processes and in the startup phase, which means I rarely get to see the results.
Would you be interested in a permanent position? Why, or why not?
Yes, if it's the right kind of company that suits me and my expertise.
What are your expectations regarding a partnership with an interim staffing agency?
Open communication and being transparent about what is expected. Interim recruiters are an important part of my sales organization.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming an interim consultant?
Take the plunge! It can feel scary to give up that steady job and income. But companies are becoming more and more interested in project-based work, so there are opportunities for most people.
