Interim Sustainability Controller

Ensures data-driven CSRD reporting and sustainable business development

An interim sustainability controller serves as the link between ambitious ESG goals and day-to-day operations. When CSRD requirements are putting pressure on timelines or the company’s first sustainability report is due, you need a specialist who can step in immediately, gather the right key metrics from across the value chain, and turn that data into clear decisions.

A reliable interim solution

Fast and accurate matching

Following a needs analysis, we develop a requirements profile that covers data platforms, reporting timelines, industry-specific key performance indicators, and organizational culture. With our AI support, we assess CSRD credentials, experience with dual materiality analysis, and the ability to drive change in complex organizations. The result is a shortlist that, upon initial review, matches over 90 percent of the desired competencies and candidate profile.

Transparent 80/20 model

In addition to the 80/20 breakdown, you’ll receive a cost breakdown for each milestone. Data mapping, gap analysis, workshops, and the final report are itemized so that the budget can be allocated in advance and tracked on a sprint-by-sprint basis. The level of transparency is higher than in traditional approaches.

Lasting value – not just a report package

The consultant will set up a train-the-trainer program in which internal superusers validate data, run scenarios, and update ESG dashboards. You will also receive a ready-made roadmap for the next cycle, including indicators for gender equality, biodiversity, and Scope 3. This will enable you to address future requirements in a timely manner.

Why choose us?

When companies grow rapidly, leadership needs can change overnight. An interim manager is a flexible solution that ensures operations continue to run smoothly, regardless of the challenges.

Benefits of an interim sustainability controller

A comprehensive CSRD roadmap and reduced reporting burden

The work is divided into sprints for data mapping, materiality, control systems, and reporting. Responsibility matrices clarify who delivers what and when. Stress related to the audit decreases, and the board can view the status in real time.

Real-time financial impact

Sustainability KPIs are linked to ERP and BI systems. Management can see how energy efficiency initiatives impact EBITDA and how improved supplier screening reduces the risk premium in bank financing. Investments can be prioritized where returns are high.

Greater engagement and brand equity

Idea platforms and internal hackathons generate suggestions that lead to actions such as reducing material waste or launching social initiatives in the supply chain. As results become apparent, pride in the company grows, employee turnover decreases, and the employer brand is strengthened.

The recruitment process

Our recruitment process is fast, streamlined, and tailored to your needs. We ensure you find the right candidate quickly through a clear job description and an efficient screening process.

1. Scope of Work & Objectives

We listen carefully to your expectations, goals, and current situation. A job description or job posting can serve as a basis, and we conduct a structured interview with the client.

2. Search for candidates in the network

We select and contact approximately 20 suitable candidates. We conduct interviews with the relevant and available consultants we identify, based on the job description.

3. Quality Assurance

The top 3–4 candidates are presented to the client within 1–3 days. A follow-up meeting with the client is held to finalize the selection and plan the next steps.

4. Customer Interview – Background Check

The client conducts interviews, any tests they may require, and interviews with the candidate’s grandparents. References are checked as needed, and a background check may be conducted on the final candidate.

5. Contract

We draw up a contract specifying the duration and scope of the assignment, always with a transparent pricing structure so that both the client and the consultant know how the fee is allocated. We always pay 80% of the fee to the consultant. If the client is dissatisfied, the contract can be terminated with a maximum of one month’s notice.

6. Assignments are carried out

Throughout the project, we maintain regular contact with both the client and the consultant to address any questions or gather feedback necessary for a successful collaboration.

7. Conclusion – Potential Employment

The assignment is concluded as specified in the agreement; however, if the assignment was intended to lead to employment and both parties agree, it will result in a hiring. The recruitment fee decreases the longer the assignment has lasted.

What does it take to be a successful sustainability controller?

System expertise and data quality

API feeds are set up for energy and material data from production. The data is matched against purchase orders and exported as validated datasets to reporting tools in just a few steps.

Knowledge of regulations and industry insight

The CSRD, the EU Taxonomy, and the CSDDD impact financing and supplier agreements. By maintaining a holistic view, reporting and strategy remain aligned, and potential conflicts are avoided.

Communicative Leadership and the Power to Drive Change

Facts are presented clearly and linked to business value. Dialogue with management and operational units bridges the gap between goals and implementation, ensuring that the organization treats sustainability as a core part of its business.
